Don’t forget the Show & Tell

February 27, 2009

Whew, what a week.  But I’m ready for class now, I think.

Don’t forget to bring your sample Selection Tool.  It can be print or digital. We’ll do a quick show-and-tell, so be prepared only to give a 30-second blurb about it.  No handouts, nothing formal.

We have many topics to cover but several are quick ones.  We’ll thoroughly air any concerns about the Exhibition and give a foretaste of the Order Draft.  So – big day!

Clarification Tweak to Exhibit Assignment

February 18, 2009

In response to a question from Molly, I tweaked the Exhibit Assignment description to clarify things a bit.

(Yes, it’s still pretty early to be working on this – over a month – so don’t panic if you haven’t started yet.)

In short, I removed some old language emphasizing the tri-fold/poster format and giving you a little more freedom. It is fine to have a computer as the centerpiece of your exhibit, and no poster or board at all.  It’s also fine to use the vintage tri-fold/poster format!  Your limit is the size of one of our class tables.

Hope this makes things just a little bit easier.

Follow up from Feb 14

February 16, 2009

Everything related to Feb 14 should now be up to date – agenda items and Planner.

I made the updates to the Selection Policy topic that I should have made prior to class – not a big difference, but a few confusing contradications were removed.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Gratuitous tech tip: I discovered this today. If you have a .docx you can’t open, just attach it to an email to your own GMAIL account.  It will allow you to open it as an html document – which for me is adequate most of the time.

Missing a Banned Book?

February 16, 2009

I only regret that I personally didn’t find much time to look at all the banned books moving around the room!

Someone left a paperback copy of Jazz by Toni Morrison, which I brought home with me.  I will have it on Feb 28.

Big day – Valentine’s

February 11, 2009

I know it’s pretty rotten to have class on Valentine’s Day.  Perhaps there will be some chocolate to help us compensate for that.

It should be an interesting day, however!  Kristie will give her long-awaited story of the challenges she became famous for.  Also, early in the day we’ll have presentations from two major vendors of school library materials.  I hear these every year, but they’re great because they have new services almost every  year.

Don’t forget to bring your challenged book for the Challenged BookPass, an idea stolen brazenly from Beth Friese.   See the Planner for details.  There have been a couple in the news just here lately.

Obviously, by now I have finished the Selection Policy Drafts.  They were quite good, overall. Let me know if you have any questions about them.

The agenda is almost ready.  See you there, 9am.

Progress on SPDs

February 6, 2009

What a week!

I’m about 75% of the way through your SP Drafts.  Some teams will be able to access their feedback now.

While I can’t promise I’ll finish them tonight, and you know what Saturdays are like – I do predict that I will meet my Sunday promise.

Enjoy your day “off” tomorrow (except for the 2 of you who are in both C7 and C8 groups, that is!)

Jan 31 followup

February 2, 2009

Updates since Saturday are complete.  These include:

  • Fixed Exhibition on the Cohort 8 Calendar – moved to March 21, as planned.
  • Updated Planner: removed Evaluating Information as a topic to read about.
  • Added Marc McMullen as a guest on Feb 14 (from Follett).

I also checked the dropboxes for the Selection Policy Drafts; I will start working on these in the order received. I may get started today (no promises), but almost certainly won’t finish before Thursday, and it may take all week.  There are a couple of blank submissions – if you’re having trouble submitting your file(s), let me know.
