As ready as I’m going to get!

January 30, 2009

For tomorrow, that is!

I’ll see you at 9a in room 119. The agenda is ready.

Today, I finished making the cover sheet for the Selection Policy – although it’s not necessary for you to worry about it yet.

The Wasman Book

January 29, 2009

We love New Steps to Service (Wasman, 1997). Here’s a legal and ethical way you might be able to consult it without buying it.

(Thanks to Kristie M. for providing this info.)

New Steps to Service: Common-sense Advice for the School Library Media Specialist
is available for free on…
Net Library
NetLibrary provides access to electronic books (eBooks), including reference books, scholarly monographs, publications of many university presses, and consumer books that have been converted into digital format. It is possible to perform full-text searches of a single eBook, search thousands of volumes simultaneously, browse topic categories, or read eBooks directly online. There is no checkout period for NetLibrary eBooks.

Users can create an account in order to use personalization tools, including creating a Favorites list, but a personal account is not required for accessing eBooks through the GALILEO interface. A personal login is required when accessing through library catalogs and through the NetLibrary web site.

For the rest of the access information, go to WebCT 6340 Readings to find the handout called “Wasman.” (Sorry to make you follow a trail of links, but proprietary access is involved.)

Jan 31 approaching

January 28, 2009

It seems forever since I’ve seen you folks – 3 weeks is a long time.

I’m well into preparations for Saturday and will let you know when finished.

I hope you’re making good progress on your Selection Policy Drafts, which are due late Sunday. You will certainly have time to work on them Saturday in groups, and to ask questions.  However, don’t hesitate to pose them now if necessary.

Exhibition Page

January 23, 2009

Kristie has prepared our Exhibition Page.

23 names – everyone is there.

I approve the scope of the list and the topics covered.  So – if you’re anxious to get started, do so!

It’s common during this assignment for topics to tighten (common) or to broaden (less common). Let me know if you find it necessary to do this.

Calendaring

January 15, 2009

As promised, I studied the combination of calendars for EDIT 6340 and EDIT 6360.  I even added the 6360 assignments to our class calendar to enhance visualization.

I really can’t see much possibility to improve it.  Two assignments fall within a week of each other, which isn’t too horribly unreasonable.  The last assignments fall right together at the end of the term – but then, you don’t have finals to worry about.

So, not having heard any ideas of how to change this from your point of view, I think I will leave the due dates alone.

Still, if we get going and find that you as a team or individual or the whole class can’t make a particular due date work, then we’ll talk.  I’m always open to tweaking the calendar in advance of a date – it’s not so easy on or after the date, though.

Followup, Class Jan 10

January 13, 2009

Hello – and thank you all for a pleasant class on Saturday.

Nothing big here today.

Don’t forget to send your email with contact information – 18 have; I know it said to do it by Jan 31 on the Planner, but this information is valuable even right now.

I’m still mulling over the assignment deadlines.  The consensus from you seemed to be “We’ll do whatever it takes, especially with lots of advance notice” – but still, I want to avoid logjams if possible.  More on that within 2-3 days.

Stay warm!

….Set….

January 9, 2009

Hello again!

I hope you received the SLM-L message from me today; I’ll be asking about that tomorrow as a check of that critical information channel.

Finally, I’ve prepared enough materials for us to have class tomorrow.

The course web site (including the Agenda for tomorrow) is ready.  I will see you in Room 119 (as far as I know) at 9a.m.  A highlight of the day will be your chance to meet Dr. Stephanie Jones, who will talk about EDIT 6360. You will also get to meet Kristie M., who will be a teaching assistant this term.

I loaded you all into WebCT this morning, and have updated most of the tools and links therein.  Let me know if you have a problem with getting in.  From the roll I have today, our class is almost identical to last semester – with one exception.

Today is a nice home work day for me; happy to deal with any problems or questions.  All of my contact info is up to date on the WebCT 6340 homepage.

Ready …

January 5, 2009

Welcome to 2009!

I have a LOT to do before Saturday (our first class!), so don’t feel like you have to go explore the website yet.

These three things, however, are critical for you to attend to ASAP:

  1. Register, if you haven’t already, for EDIT 6340.
  2. Buy your texts. (These will be available, I’m told, at the Gwinnett bookstore on Sat.)
  3. Mark your calendars.

Info about texts and the meeting dates can be found on the course home page.

More to come this week.  Please let me know if you have trouble with any of the above tasks.
