Set for Saturday

February 3, 2010 by maf

Hello!

Here’s a quick reminder that we have our second internship meeting this coming Saturday, 10-12, Room 118.   The agenda is pretty much ready.  We’re talking about job hunting.   I’ll see you there!

May Graduates: April 19 is set for Marathon

January 28, 2010 by maf

Hello!

For the nine of you who plan to graduate in May, the date of April 19 is now official for the Marathon.  Save The Date.  All day, if possible – the event will consume about 1/2 day by the time you come and go.  The other half of the day is best taken off (if possible) for mental health reasons.

I will create detailed instructions for you in the next several weeks and send those out over several channels.

In the meantime, plan your day “off” and let me know if it simply won’t work for you.

First Internship Meeting of the Semester: 10a.m.

January 19, 2010 by maf

Hello!

I’m looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday — that is, if you’re an active intern, or plan to be an active intern between now and Fall 2010, or if you’re planning to graduate in Spring or Summer of 2010.

We will meet 10-12 in Room 118.  Here’s the agenda.  See you there!

PPP’s, Stars, and Critiques: Compilation

January 6, 2010 by maf

Hello!  Here’s hoping you all had a great holiday.

Kristie M. has created a wonderful resource for us: a compilation of EDIT 6900 products going back several years.   Not only should you find yours there, but you will find many alumni products.

Yours is missing?  Let me know, and point me to it, and I can update.

These items have great utility across all of our SLM community.  Happy browsing!

Switched: from WebCt to eLC

December 16, 2009 by maf

Hello!

As promised, I moved everyone’s internship stuff from WebCT to eLC/EPIT-Advisement.

From now on, when I say eLC, this is the course I mean – because it’s the only one I’m going to use.  All of my students will be in there.

If you haven’t already, I think it would be smart just to login and make sure I copied everything accurately from WebCT.   I tried to be careful, but you know how easy it is to make a copy/paste error.  Make sure all of your attachments are there.  Do it soon – WebCt disappears on 12/31 and then we won’t be able ever to go back (sniff).

The quiz made the transfer with no problem.  Most of you already completed the quiz, so this doesn’t matter to you.

And from now on, all internship activity takes place there.  I won’t use the gradebook as a progress checker, just because the tool is so bad in eLC.  I am keeping a spreadsheet on my hard drive for that purpose.  In January, we can discuss what you might be missing from this change.  I suspect not very much.  I am also planning to create some better methods of communicating the internship to you as well.

Let me know if you have any questions.   Thank you for 100% participation in the course evals for Fall semester!  All courses, all students.

Grading: EDIT 6900 is winding down.  I plan to post grades tomorrow (if that’s possible on Internet Free Shipping Day), and then finish up any remaining feedback during the break.

See you this afternoon

Looks like the weather is not going to be a problem by this afternoon – and so I look forward to seeing you at 1pm (EDIT 6900 only).

Watching the weather

December 4, 2009 by maf

Tomorrow might be fun. I am watching the weather and will make a firm decision early in the morning.  (It’s a great thing that our class is planned for the afternoon anyway.)  Likely, these muddled weather models will move toward rain.

Plan B would be a Wimba class.  I do NOT expect you to develop two versions of your presentation in any case.  If must be, we will make do.

I will post here tomorrow and probably on SLM-L too.

This message refers only to EDIT 6900 – I’m not expecting attendance from any other group tomorrow, just to repeat myself once again. :-)

Crits Finished (6900 & 7340)

December 2, 2009 by maf

I’m reporting here that your critiques are finished (as far as I can see) – so now would be a good time to review the gradebook.  Grading these critiques was a team effort.  If you have any questions, let me know.

Here is the Critique  compilation page, thanks to Carrie.  Again, let me point out that you can learn a lot very quickly by browsing through a collection like this.  I will certainly be bookmarking this page for myself, and tagging it with every topic label that seems appropriate!

As for other assignments, I am grading things as fast as I can, trying to get the decks cleared for the avalanche that will occur on Sunday.   I am more caught up with EDIT 6900 than with 7340 at the moment.

Almost over! Dec 5

December 1, 2009 by maf

Our last meeting – EDIT 6900 ONLY (although any/all others are welcome as guests) – is Saturday, 1-4 p.m.

Batting order requests are now being accepted.   You can view the current state of affairs at the agenda – which is now updated.  (And I’m so glad that my website is back up and running!  That was scary.)

I’ll see you there!

Wrap-up, Nov. 14

November 17, 2009 by maf

Thank you for your engagement with our double-class day last Saturday.

I’ve updated the agenda.  We actually did get everything done.

I tweaked the planner a bit – and it’s now ready for your use.  I think that it lists everything you need to do from here on out.

I sensed a good bit of stress in the room Saturday.  Does it help when I say that this is more or less normal for late first semester of second year?  The courses are more abstract; there are less face-to-face meetings for social support – many students find this somehow more challenging.    People do make it through, though!

So I’ll see you in three weeks.  Note the different class time: 1 to 4 p.m.  My schedule continues to be frantic this week, but should get better starting next week.   In other words, I’ll still be behind with everything at least until next week.
